I don't blame the soldiers, Israeli or American. They are repeatedly put in violent, uncontrolled situations, and have to make quick decisions. I don't even blame them, if they fire back, and it turns out there was no threat to them. Because they can't be expected to make exactly correct decisions, every time, about what level of threat they are facing.

But I do blame the civilian leaders who put them in that position, who believe in Force as a First Resort, and who didn't have an exit strategy when they sent the soldiers in.
