Even Gates has diversified out of substantial chunks of Microsoft. Are you ready to call him a pessimist about MS's prospects?

Of course not. The reason "diversification" stands on its face as spreading risk around.

On the other hand, the reason "tax optimization", or its more explicit cousin "estate tax planning" suggests a complex set of strategies in which the future value of present assets factors quite significantly. Whether you are willing to see that or not is another matter.

The choice to divest one's self of specific assets for "estate tax planning" purposes, is on its face the conclusion of a comparative valuation exercise.

Now you can pick up the logic from there.
