Earlie, the poet A.E. Housman was among the first to regularly use air travel after WWI, to cross the Channel. He was also a very serious scholar of classics (Cambridge U) and was working on an edition of an obscure author that he very much wanted to finish. He calcluated the odds of being killed in a crash (very high then, of course) and decided he wanted to see his edition through the press, so he stopped flying.
