Yes, but at the speed of the usb 1, not at usb 2 speed.

Most USB 2.0 ports and devices are backward compatible to USB 1.1, but you now need to read the labels of what periphals you buy and connect as they are surely not all upward compatible.

BTW, for a laptop you can simply buy a modular USB 2.0 PC card and drop it in the external PC card slot on you laptop whenever you wish to use it.
