Actually, after Clairtone Peter Monk started a hotel venture in the Pacific, initially in Fiji, with his long time associate David Gilmour. When they returned to Canada he started Barrick with a marginal producer in the Yukon I believe. They really got into business when they bought Camflo Mines for loads of Barrick paper - Camflo was saddled with debt and pretty well in the hands of its bankers. Bob Smith, a dour mining engineer, was President of Camflo and he turned out to be a good foil for Munk. But with the Camflo acquisition Barrick got a group of terrific miners, and some pretty good geologists too. But Smith was essentially an employee and not an entrepreneur at all.
