In my ramblings of Jefferson's Bible I could not recall
the name of the fella who spoke. He is Clay Jenkinson
and his craft (speaking in character) is called Chautauqua--
I would never known that except going to his website-
th-jefferson.org

If you can check it out at a library (if in the US). I saw
his portrayal of Jefferson and one he was doing Lewis of Lewis and Clark, Jefferson's friend. Very fun performances.
In "Lewis and Clark" he mentions of one of his men that was hired knew a universal hand language that 50 tribes with different speak understood. I had just read an article that suggests that language was created from hand signals--how the same part of the brain that controls speech controls the hands, now I am driving myself crazy looking for that.

fun note: Lewis and Clark and some of the men kept diaries and logs, they could not say the Indian girls name what we now read as "Sacagawea". They had 50 different interpretations between them all (the sounds were gutteral) and so Clark just called her "Janey". She was brought along as an interpreter as well as wife to a French-trader because she understood Shoshone which was important because they needed to trade for horses. As it turns out she was the sister to the chief. She was stolen by another tribe and sold to this french guy. The tribe was buck naked and wore thickly applied bear grease and the greeting instead of a handshake was a full body hug with an up and down motion and a sharp cry or yelp. Every time these people agreed on something they hugged. LMAO listening as the character played out the greetings.
Lewis got shot in the butt coming back on his expedition by his own man and had to lay face down for the rest of the trip.
He was told by Pres Jefferson to give a speech that inform the indigenous tribes that he was their "father" and would take care of them and to quit fighting amongst each other and obey common law.
They couldn't understand the ideals of democracy and just
wanted to trade for better guns and blue beads. Maybe there
is a parallel to what is happening now. At least they don't hug like the Shoshone but don't show the bottom of the shoe.
The black guy who made the trip was also very interesting.
