I've been associated with public education for 20 years. We've given a jillion kids in our communities around here fabulous educations with many, many of them attending the top universities in the country. The kids that transfer to the high school from private schools in, say 10th or 11th grade, are almost without exception way behind -- especially in the sciences. They are like fish gasping in the air. The private schools don't even bother to enter the math and science competitions because these schools are routinely creamed by the public school kids at the local, state, and national levels.

The symptoms you allude to are complex, controversial in cause, and exhibit all the typical characteristics of organizations heavily layered by politics and ax grinding of ALL stripes.
