That is a pretty juicy article but for someone who was an active young adult in 1972, I find it flawed.

The military was dismantling the Viet Nam War effort in 1972. They weren't interested in sending anyone new to the region. The Guard had been a well known safe haven for young guys who would not be sent to Viet Nam. I knew several guys who were begging to get into the Guard so that they wouldn't end up in Nam. Keggers were on the lawns for several square blocks around University campuses for Friday Afternoon Clubs (FACs), Friday night parties, Saturday Parties. On Sunday mornings you had your choice of a Bloody Mary and eggs party or a Screw driver party. That wasn't enough so in the town where I lived Wednesday Night cordial club was initiated. As a college student if you weren't drinking often and heavy in those days you were in a small minority of deviants (called narcs in those days) from the norm. The air at these events was always filled with heavy odor from pot and other substances were flowing pretty freely. Bush was so normal for his age and time that my biggest concern is that he is nothing too special. I haven't seen the kind of charismatic special appeal that attracts me to leaders. Just a hard working straight dude, bound to stand on good principles.

The author of that article is either uninformed on the culture of 1972 or she is deliberately misrepresenting historical reality, in which Bush was very normal, especially considering the family pressure to be something else. The establishment was labeled corrupt and evil in 1972 and anyone who was totally aligned with it was not to be trusted. Places of worship represented the establishment so they too were pretty vacant at the time.

Now the culture has changed. Bush is no longer a kid out to have fun and figure out his role in life. Not successful in business you say? hmmmm...wish I had his bank roll.

He has grown up...

"He stole the 2000 elections." Elections are a legal alternative to violence in establishing power structures in our country. They involve democratic representation and the will of the people. Stealing is against the law, the law determined that there was no theft. You got a problem with the laws of our land? Your boy lost the race, he challenged the event, the judges ruled, get over it.

"Please, read his history. It's scary as hell."

What is scary is the type of revisionism you posted.

"He's created a horrible culture of fear and naked militarism while in the White House."

This is a good point. Not that I think Bush himself has done this or is capable of it, but I worry that we may be headed in that direction.
