It's a very complex issue, of course, but America DID play a central part in the demise of the USSR. America was a far more important presence over there than their country was ever in the US. Every 5 year economic plan used to promise to "catch up and then surpass America". America was a constant reminder that something was rotten in the Communist kingdom.

Eventually, they were forced to decide that if you can't beat them, join them. (How is THIS for an oversimplification of the day?... –g)

<<<In November 2002, Space Imaging applied for a .25-meter license with the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This license would enable Space
Imaging to build and launch an imaging system that will be able to see objects on the
ground as small as a quarter meter in size. Space Imaging has a .5-meter license from
NOAA approved in December 2000 and a .4-meter license approved in November
2002. For more information regarding licensing of commercial remote sensing satellite
systems, see: licensing.noaa.gov .>>>

Progress on the technical front that will improve the ability to detect people or machines invading industrial sites or other areas when they are supposed to be there. Rtn and Lmt are part of this effort.
