America was a far more important presence over there than their country was ever in the US. Every 5 year economic plan used to promise to "catch up and then surpass America". America was a constant reminder that something was rotten in the Communist kingdom. Yes, a nation that adopts an inherently dysfunctional economic system and tries to build its motivational system around paranoia will eventually fail. These were internal weaknesses, and were not created by any American policy.
