I had converted most of my systems (voter registration for one) to a 4 digit year fields back in the mid-90's, yet I had to prove to management that there would be no problems. The State paid over $200,000 to EDS to verify that all the systems would be ok.

The problem that Y2K caused it cranked up the salaries of DP
people as much as 50%, which will cause big problems in pensions later. It also forced our State to lay off
many workers because wages got too high. That IMO happened to the whole industry. And it shifted money and time away
from developing new applications to testing legacy systems for Y2K.

In summary, the Y2K over-reaction was a big blunder which contributed to the high unemployment and slowdown in the technology field.

I realized it was foolish and spoke out at the time.
Y2k is no more a problem than countless other bugs
in programs that are always out there waiting to go
off. I often had dreams of people not being able to vote or mothers not getting food stamps. Now I am in the stress-free busness of stock trading.
