The ocean is not a bottomless supply. One good happening is that fish are being bred inland in special ponds, in much cleaner, healthier conditions.

We are polluting the oceans so badly that many of the stocks that are left have dangerous levels of chemicals or fecal bacteria. The coasts of the world are pouring thousands of tons of raw sewerage into the waters daily, among other things.

Grim picture for the future, isn't it? Just figured I'd cheer everyone up before the weekend.

Good fishing!

Fishing stocks were already down over 80% since the 70's. If you look at the actual article, you'd know that the time to get upset and do something was 30 years ago. The data pretty much shows that catches have leveled off since the 70's for most fisheries.

While you can blame the Japanese for inventing industrial fishing, they do not have the largest fishing fleet, nor do they catch the most fish - not even close; but they do keep the most complete, and most open records - so that the Nature Article could be written.

Dear Ish: Been reading your posts on Swordfish with interest. We used to have a lot right here in S. Fla. in the Gulfstream. Many friends of mine used to go out and catch one or two to earn a little money. Never hear of that anymore. As to the rest of sport fishing, I have heard the reason its fallen off locally isnt that the stocks are down but that the BAIT FISH have increased dramatically (netting no longer allowed for catching bait fish) thus more competition for THE HOOK. jdn
