Yes, "IT" is more about where the technology is used than what the technology is.

"Many big companies" are moving from technology companies to service companies. Most of the service required is due to the fact that the systems are poorly implemented and dificult to deal with.

If IT was worth a damn, then companies dieing to lower operating costs would be upgrading equipment while they are cutting personel. We all know that they are not.

It is not surprising that consumer spending has held up the economy while business spending has been very weak.

I don't know where or why you expect "big bucks." Software and services are the yoke about the neck of a technology economy driven by chips and Moore's Law. Is there software in a DVD player? I guess not, mine doesn't crash every day and I don't need a systems analyst to make it work.
