The story of Pol Pot, and our craven involvement in his rise to power, is one of the great genocide tragedies of any time. Our abandonment of Cambodia, after interfering there, and tipping the balance, should have made us realize that our ability to positively intervene in other countries is...iffy. Our fatal flaw as a country is overweening hubris. I just hope it doesn't destroy us.

Yup. That has been confirmed by the internal documents. We KNEW our actions were giving support to Pol Pot. In fact, we knew that without our actions, Pol Pot had virtually no support. And we continued our bombing.

All that just to teach the 3rd world who is master. Ugh!

But it drug Cambodia into that terrible war.. Which then created the vacuum for the killing fields to develop.

I think the North Vietnamese troops operating in Cambodia dragged that country into the war. Not to mention the Chinese government which shipped military supplies to both the NV and Khmer Rouge in from Cambodia's southern coast.

And it wasn't a vacuum which allowed the killing fields to develop. It was a communist victory in Indochina.

Freudian slip? :-) I guess you meant "dragged"...
