I'm not sure that I completely agree. I've lived in the silicon valley most of my life - well actually on the peninsula.

I took a job with a high tech firm in another state (Mid-Atlantic region). I found it difficult to hire suitably trained engineers to fill urgent needs - most would not move to the area because the opportunities were not as great as in SV. As one engineer told me "you lose your job in SV, you go next door - in the Mid-Atlantic you have to move."

The point is in SV there would have been dozens of highly qualified engineers applying for openings. Obviously knowing you can find productive employees has value.

How much this experience applies to administrative jobs or something as easy and accessible as computer programming, I'll leave for another post.
