It seems that unions got so strong and had such expensive packages, that it was inevitable that someone could do their jobs cheaper.

That is an unsupported assumption. I watched companies like Dell move their factories overseas and they have never had union representation. If there was one reason given more and more it was health care costs.

The reason i disagree with you is because the Democrats have always represented the working man. They were the great protector, the anti management party. Yes a lot of companies are run by people who vote republican and a lot of companies are run by voting Democrats. The point I was making is that during the Clinton Gore administration the economy and creation of jobs were focused only in two areas.
1. The explosive intrenet . com's, and 2. services.
Once we have a transition of people over to the "Service" area of the economy and there is little to no manufacturing base, we begin to see DeFlation and stagnation. Once the .coms stopped multiplying, we saw those jobs also go into the "service " arena. Thus a glut of service providers in menial jobs all making or starting at minimum wage. The economic engine of the United States is no longer balanced. Yes India, China, Korea, Bangledesh, and others have cheap labor. Yes the Unions got out of control through manipulation of the Democratic party,
{I.E funding Dem Candidates through the Unions, promising wages for little to no work from the Union employees.}
The democrats manipulated the workers into a false belief that by just punching a clock they were guaranteed a paycheck, insurance from cradle to grave and a healthy retirement. I was UAW, And Steel Workers, Saw it with my own eyes, also a Democrat, in Peoria Illinois. Look at Keystone Steel and Wire, Caterpillar, Boeing, and any other manufacturing company in the U.S. JMHO
