See Say's Law.

The American public did not wake up in 1978 and say they needed a PC, nor did they wake up say they needed a car back in 1920. Most of the things that we use every single day were laughed at when they first appeared. It took someone with a great deal more imagination than the American consumer to think up those things and someone else with money to lend them to make it happen. Investment comes before you even know you want these things and supply creates its own demand.
