The departure of the Soviets removed the reason for hostilities in Afghanistan, though they did continue in Chechnya. Likewise, the reason for al Qaeda antipathy against the Great Satan, i.e. the U.S.A., has everything to do with the exact same behavior on our government's part as with the Soviets, territorial aggression. To the average al Qaeda soldier, imperialists are all the same. I'm sure you'll be happy to distinguish American imperialism from Soviet imperialism. <gg>
