To the thread :

I have Window XP Home. Friday night i downloaded an update of Yahoo Messanger. System worked fine. however, sometime late in the evening, Window suddenly froze up, as i noticed my mouse disappeared at the bottom. Then a message popped up said i have software conflict, and Window reverted automatically to Safe Mode. I shut down the computer and then restarted it again, and it seemed to work fine. (Hindsight, i probably should immediately use System Restore, but i forgot.)

Anyway, I did not got on my computer until Sunday morning. And Window XP refused to load, i.e. it attempted to load and then hang, no Log in screen appear. I was able to do a reboot and got into Safe Mode. I am working in Safe Mode now. However, System Restore does not fix it at all eventhough it told me it has successfully restore to the checkpoint i chose.

i check all hardware devices thru divices manager - either they are all working properly or status unavailable because Window is in Safe Mode ...

Any idea what went wrong ? I am not knowledgeable enough to use the Recovery Console as the last resort ...

Does it look like the Registry is corrupted ? or some files in the "Boot Sector" were corrupted ?

Or this might be a hardware issue ? I have AMD chip and occasionally the Ultra 100 would not load and system failed to boot. A quick switch off power supply and switch back on usually fix that. I dont know if this eventually causes the above problem.

Thanks for responses.
