More likely timed to APPEAR to send a mesage to Bush, mostly for internal Russian consumption - Putin pressures Bush, that sort of thing. On a much more complex level, maybe an implict threat to the EU - give Russia better trade terms or we will buy more Euros, pushing the price up relative to the US dollar, and hitting your exports even more. I imagine China might also make simmilar threats, to stop buying US Dollars and buy Euros... But thinking about that higher level of complexity makes my head hurt, I will leave that to you, Jay, DJ, elmat, and others. I have enough trouble just trying to do the buy low - sell high thing.
