To: techguerrilla who wrote (4651 ) 6/3/2003 11:39:00 AM From: Jim Willie CB Read Replies (2) | Respond to of 5423 bear in mind, TechMan, that computer world is fast moving Microscheiss will be passed by eventually in software world with the mushrooming of the internet, Java, Linux and a few other software products are more widely used AOL recently extracted big money from Microfart, in settling bully tactic crappola clearly the Evil Empire is attempting to extend their sphere of influence but I think it will be difficult their MSN internet service was a loss leader for over a year, resulting in large giveaways, huge ad promotion costs, and some minor gains in mktshare Evil Empire will have to outright purchase large neighboring blocks to software with $40 billion in cash, these guys can still purchase a new Central American nation every few years they will not go away, but their SW monopoly will become less and less an issue over time the computer world is the most vibrant and quickly changing in the US Economy today, and has been for decades they will not go away, and will extend like they have into media with MS/NBC and MSN internet service I am not naive, and do wonder if their extensions will be even more ominous than just their SW destructive influence I just heard last night that the old Digital Equip Corp genius Gordon Bell (he built the VAX) is now a MSFT engineer in internet traffic monitoring in a Big Brother capacity I was heartened to hear Bell is still active, but bothered he is working to fortify Big Brother computer eavesdropping methods few are aware of the feeding of MSFT from Digital in 1988 a project of ours in my DEC group was interrupted, as Project Prizm was killed suddenly, on order by the aging geriatric CEO Ken Olsen Olsen didnt see any future in a powerful industrial-strength PC operating system the Prizm skunkwork manager was a fellow named Dave Cutler he became project manager to a little MSFT product IT IS CALLED WINDOWS NT my old company Digital blew it we could have taken over the PC space we invented networking with Ethernet, having the first intranet called (ENet: engineering network) I used to send out emails internally in 1985-87 to my softball team, which I managed Olsen didnt think emails across different O/S protocols would go anywhere he didnt think file sharing across disparate networks would go anywhere either so Cisco took up that baton and ran a while with it Olsen didnt think PC's had much future beyond games so we lost VP John Rose to Compaq, who ran a while with it Compaq in 4 years became the fastest company in history to go from zero to $1 billion WE HAD THE COMPUTER WORLD IN OUR HANDS AT DIGITAL AND OLSEN BLEW IT with his screwup came serious hits to my career I continue to have occasional conversations with younger professionals in the workplace who admire and respect MSFT they do not have any concept of the former extreme extreme excellence in SW development in the 1970 and 1980 decades they simply have nothing to compare against they grew up with Apple and Microscheiss, and respect both Apples deserves respect, but Microshitshaft does not we will be fighting the MSFT monopoly extensions in a far worse manner than Standard Oil for many years but their influence on desktop SW is on the wane, fortunately / jim
