Sorry if my position lends itself to taken literally.

In the case of technology, *generally* speaking, it costs *more* to get the same level of improvement in a mature technology as it does to generate that first not-quite-good-enough spark of "Ah Ha" that led to its genesis.

And with respect to sprinkling money about in the hopes of generating more of those "Ah Ha" events, it is a useful strategy. Unfortunately, occasionally we get a few Vesper sized "Ah $hit" events along the way too. Comes with the territory. And if we are going to consciously embark upon such a seeding strategy, then we should at least recognize that the bad is a cost of getting the good, and not just pro-forma it away.

As far as swinging for the fences, yes. I do agree. Sometimes there's nothing to lose and everything to gain. Me, I'm no athlete, so I'll take a walk if it gets me on base. Even better if it forces in a winning "run".
