Conservatives are not against government and most of them are not against gays. Conservatives are forever complaining that gov't is in their faces and taking their hard earned money. How is that different from an extremist like Rudolph who believes the gov't killed his father because the FDA did not approve a cancer drug in time to save him? The only difference I see is that hard line conservatives don't advocate violence to get what they want. That's not an "only", that's a world of difference. Please explain the world of difference. Also you still haven't show how this is relevant to your application of "when there is smoke there is usually fire" to Democrat's claim about Republicans, while considering the Republicans claims about Democrats to be a sign of something wrong with the Republicans instead of the Democrats. Actually, I got off the track. With Reps. they have a history of behavior that makes them suspect on certain issues. Just like a former thief is the first one to be fingered when something is missing so too is the GOP. Racism, the party of the rich, advocates of an aggressive foreign policy, emphasis on the military, proponents of a smaller gov't etc are some of the traditional, negative perceptions of the GOP. Therefore, when a T. Lott or a Sanatorum acts out, it fits right in with those perceptions. With the rise of Bush, there has been this whole compaign to convince the public that this is the new GOP. No longer a regional party of the South but a national party with a more sophisticated agenda. However, the more I see the more it seems like the old dog from years past......the same old, same old. Do I think those negative perceptions of the GOP describe everyone in the party? No, I don't. I think there are a lot of Rep. moderates who don't share the negative perceptions of the party.......and I was prepared to believe those moderates had made a difference. However, it looks like there still are not enough of them. That's why I believe where there is smoke, there is still fire when it comes to the GOP. ted
