The reboot happened yesterday (Thursday) around 5:00 PM Eastern time. Apparently search did not come back up at that time, which would explain why it wasn't working last night.

So much for my theory that this morning's gremlins were caused by a sub working on the search index.

That's correct. It would've been working yesterday but not last night. Once Eric reported it, I knew exactly what was wrong. The box that handles searches boots a lot faster than the message database machine, so when they all rebooted yesterday afternoon, the search box couldn't find a connection to the message database.

Having the ISP cold boot the search box this afternoon cured it.

Edit: I doubt that had anything to do with this morning's performance problems, but it'd be nice if it did.
