Gandhi on Jan. 30, 1948. The court acquitted Savarkar, citing insufficient evidence, but there was never much doubt about where his sympathies lay: A hard-line Hindu nationalist who wrote admiringly of Nazi Germany, he made no secret of his antipathy toward India's Muslim population or toward Gandhi, whose embrace of religious tolerance and diversity he saw as a threat to India's cultural purity. Moreover, Savarkar was personally acquainted with Nathuram Godse, Gandhi's assassin and one of Savarkar's most devoted followers. Some historians still believe that Godse would not have committed the murder without a green light from Savarkar, who died in 1966. But yesterday's suspect is today's hero. In a ceremony this afternoon, India's Hindu-nationalist government unveiled a portrait of Savarkar to hang opposite Gandhi's in the central hall of Parliament, describing him as a neglected and misunderstood patriot who deserves his place in the pantheon of India's great leaders. The ceremony reflected the degree to which hard-line Hindu nationalism has moved into the mainstream of Indian politics, drowning out debate on other topics, such as development, and alarming those who see the movement as a threat to the secular, pluralistic nature of Indian democracy.genocidewatch.org <...who abet pogroms against Muslims...> The Chief Minister of the Indian state of Gujarat, Narendra Modi, stands before a crowd of thousands of supporters, doing what he does best: breathing fire against Muslims. He tells the cheering crowds that the nearly 2,000 Muslims who were killed in state-sponsored pogroms earlier this year deserved to die. They "lost" their chance, he says, when they did not condemn an attack by unknown terrorists on a train that killed 58 Hindu activists in February. The Hindu crowd cheers with enthusiasm, tossing marigold garlands onto the stage... In November, a distinguished tribunal led by former Indian high court judges released the results of their investigation which concluded that last spring's attacks were "an organized crime perpetuated by the state's chief minister and his government," helped by "public exhortations and celebrations of violence" by rightwing groups. But no action has been taken against any government or police official.216.239.33.100 <...and raze mosques.> Although the Congress Party had governed India with a commitment to secularism, in 1992 the Congress government under Prime Minister P.V. Narashima Rao could not regrettably contain the BJP’s campaign against the Babri mosque in Ayodhya. In the campaign the BJP continued its calls to raze the mosque and build a Hindu temple on the site it claimed was the birth place of the Hindu god , Lord Rama. On 6 December 1992 the 464-old year mosque was demolished by Hindu extremists. This fuelled more communal violence and riots all over India...216.239.33.100 <And have been waging war against Muslims for decades, in Kashmir.> Amnesty International says: Jammu and Kashmir is one of the most militarised regions in the world having approximately 700,000 security forces stationed there. In the eleven years since some elements of the pro-independence movement chose to use violence, 34,000 people, thousands of who were civilians, including the elderly, children, women and other non-combatants, have reportedly been killed. Human rights abuses by the security forces, police and armed opposition groups have remained at high levels throughout the decade. Indiscriminate violence is widespread and civilians are killed on a daily basis. web.amnesty.org (They say "11 years", but that's just the latest phase. In fact, the war has been ongoing, off and on, since the British left in 1948.) Never lived in India. Yes, that's my view. Do you want to debate, or curse? Standards definitely deteriorate around here, with no moderator. There is an abundance of evidence easily available on the internet, to support every word I said.
