His statement is a wry comment on the conservative world view. When you drill their dogma to bedrock, you find only misanthropy for the less fortunate.

I assume we are talking about my original post,"A poor man should be hard at work improving his miserable financial condition. "

You, as a "progressive,: see this as "misanthropy." I, as a "libertarian", see it as "Tough love." As JFK said, "Life is unfair."

I suspect that you would find that most of us who have grown children have seen this on a personal basis. It is amazing how often one out of three of your kids looks at the world around his 10th year, and says, "hey, I think I will go that way." Then we parents go through a period of trying to bail them out of trouble, until we finally give up and tell them, "No More!"

This generalizes real easy.

Feudal Europe, like royal Arabia, is based on the few monopolizing the main source of wealth. In feudal Europe, that was a finite resource - land. In Saudi Arabia, it is oil, which is a state owned (read: royal family) enterprise.

Economics in a free market is not a zero sum game.
