I am not a theologian (theologist?) but my understanding of the Bible is that God has punished the Jews on many occasions for turning away from His Word.

When I see settlers arguing that the West Bank is theirs because God gave it to them, I get a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. Some of them treat Arabs as inferior people.

We talk a lot on this thread about the bad things that Arabs do, but it's impossible to even suggest that a Jew might possibly have done something wrong without being attacked.

It's a tribal mentality, and it's outmoded.

I've actually been asked by Jews if I am a "member of the tribe"!

My husband used to play games with an Orthodox Jew who would cut me dead if I said hello to him, because I am NOT a member of the tribe (MOT is another expression).

Hi michael97123; Sigh.

What you're seeing in CobaltBlue is the slow turning of the Republicans against Israel. Bush's comments reported in Haaretz are only the beginning. (See #reply-19023414 for the frightening quotes.)

As a Jew, you should be aware that when the going gets rough, the right wing tends to blame outsiders, and the Jews make some of the most handy outsiders around to blame.

For a long time, the right wing has blamed the Arabs, also outsiders. This has been very convenient for the Israelis as it has caused the US to have a constant foreign policy in support of Israel.

But it hasn't been a very useful alliance for the US, and as the Iraq debacle unfolds, there are too many connections to Israel for the American right wing to ignore. It's just too easy to suppose that an American citizen, who is also Jewish, and who happens to have supported the war against Iraq, may have divided loyalties. That is, the right wing, xenophobic as they are, will suppose that those Jews who support Israel do so because Israel is more important to them than the United States is.

I know, it's an old accusation. And it plays well with the right wing. And it's back, whether you want to deny it or not. As the fiasco in Iraq continues, it will only grow.

In short, you guys are going to get blamed once again.

At best, Israel can expect to see the end of US support, if not in this administration, then in one of the next two.
