jrhana,

No, actually pezz is being completely truthful in regards to the recent research. Whether or not the research is complete and accurate is an entirely different matter.

The fact remains that the most recent research into the Atkin's diet (and its many variations) shows that, contrary to popular and prevailing medical beliefs, the relatively high fat, high cholesterol diet sans carbohydrates, is actually begetting better blood readings on triglycerides and cholesterol than the AMA recommended low fat, low cholesterol, moderate exercise diet. The better blood readings are generally believed to equate to a longer and healthier life.

One reason for those (questionable) "conclusions" for those folks promoting the Atkin's diet is that the Atkin's diet is much easier to "stick" with for most people who have trouble with more conventional diets. Moderate exercise under either diet regime had relatively the same "good" effects.

Now, I'm firmly in the corner that is highly skeptical of these results. Common sense, and years of avoiding high fat, high cholesterol foods may be clouding my abilities to accept the "fact" that something contrary to my beliefs may actually be better than what I'm currently doing.

But my beliefs don't alter the short term research results at all. The Atkin's diet is (apparently) working well for many people right now. Longer term research is under way, and may be years from obtaining results that would either confirm or refute the arguments presented by the Atkin's diet proponents.

As for me, I'll stick with what I'm doing and hope for the best.
