My grandad bought a farm, 400 acres more or less, in 1914 and paid cash. They didn't need a loan of any type until the 1930's at the time he bought a tractor and began to phase out the horses. He was not wealthy, an average person could save up enough to buy 400 acres for cash in a decade or so. Can't do that now. His dad obtained a farm as homestead.

People have more manufactured goods now, but less control over their own activities.
