Hawk, Re: I would say that the CIA's role in overthrowing the Taliban is DEFINITELY one of our greatest successes. But now we have to see if something viable can be created out of that success.. I find this a curious thing to say. Under the Taliban, Afghanistan enjoyed a degree of stability, and the heroin trade was nearly eradicated, at least for one season. A cynic would say that the curtailed planting of the opium poppy was merely designed to correct a supply imbalance in the worldwide heroin market, while the Taliban was able to collect $43 Million from the U.S. for the effort. However, now that the U.S. and the Northern Alliance have effectively destroyed national governance in Afghanistan, there has been a dramatic rise in banditry, heroin production and almost no effort made at reconstructing the country. If this is progress, it is a strange sort of improvement. -Ray
