Wow. I'm so sorry for your wife. I feel like I've seen a similar phenomenon on SI. The people whom I know in academia do not act like middle schoolers, but then they've taught them (or their close cousins, the high schoolers) and they probably take their charges as a cautionary example. Of course there are people on SI who are fine conversationalists, and who do NOT converse (or think) like middle schoolers- but they are in the minority, it seems to me. Perhaps the Europeans we have met are a biased sample? I've never met adult Germans who acted like middle schoolers, but my sample of adult Germans is probably under 500 people, while I've met many 1000's of Americans over my lifetime. I hope Old Europe is more grown-up than teenage America. One likes to hope there are adults SOMEWHERE on the planet. :-)
