>>Those who will win on the way up are those who buy now and do not sell until the time is right, when the market rolls over and starts the other way<<

time is right

how do you know when that time arrives, sig?

you realize of course in your analysis "down" there is no mention of when to sell other than "waiting for an uptick"

just how many of those were there?

Add "I didn't want to pay taxes" to your list of errors. I heard that a lot. People who bought XYZ years ago and didn't sell because they didn't want to pay capital gains taxes. Now, they've lost 75 percent (or more) of their capital and have little interest in the market at all any more.
Look at this thread. Dow up 200 and you were the only poster all day.
As for the experts, Barron's this week talks with Barbara Marcin of Gabelli Blue Chip Value and Wall Street Week fame. Her valuation-sensitive fund lost 31 percent last year.
Ouch.
If they can't beat an index on the way up, and they can't protect capital on the way down, then there is no value in "professional" money management.
