Hopefully, some good reporters will do some interviews and see exactly what went on there. And that parents will interview the Superintendent of the schools...as well as the School Board.

If this teacher were really trying to get the kids to think, perhaps he could have considered a project that would lead the kids to understand there are MANY ways to look at a situation. His idea seems to have been "my way or the highway..."

And no, I don't think we have different concepts of what good education is, John. Perhaps different ways of how to get that good education. Putting biased info into children's heads at all levels is definitely not a good idea, IMO.

we don't hear talk of student dissatisfaction. But neither of us knows what went on the classroom.

John,
You are getting closer to the problem.
When it comes to basics parent satisfaction should be weighted higher than student satisfaction. Students can become expressive after they learn how to read and write.

The fact that so little is known about what goes on in classrooms is going to change. The free ride for teachers is coming to an end. They are going to have to perform to a measurable standard because the job, in too many cases, is not being done satisfactorily.

Many folks still believe if the student fails to learn the teacher failed to teach.

Teacher performance can be and will be measured. Some will quit...they can join the rest of America that has to perform to a job standard everyday.

Your argument that you teach independent thinking is fine for college and grad school. The great problem is too many kids are leaving high school without basic skills. That must change.

GWB is attacking this on three fronts...federal funds, teacher recruitment, standards based teaching. I believe when teachers quit banging their heads against the wall and cooperate great progress will be made quickly.

You will never convince me that the solution is to reduce a college professor's workload.

BTW lets do away with tenure too. Why should you be invincible? For professors, this is a turf battle. That may be part of the problem of lack of cooperation. I believe the level of cooperation will improve drastically when you have something to lose.
