The Iraq War as Danse Macabre
_____________________________________

Saddam and the WMD Mystery
By HAROLD A. GOULD*
June 21, 2003

counterpunch.org

<<...If the WMDs are never found, then what has taken place must be understood as one of the more bizarre manifestations ever witnessed of mutual deceit being pursued on a truly international scale. On one side we have the Bush administration, determined to wage war upon Iraq and Saddam Hussein for a host of genuine and spurious reasons, willing to distort and embellish the intelligence data to whatever degree necessary to justify it, and prepared to take whatever sweat might follow once the dimensions of the deception become public in the aftermath.

On the other side we have the Saddam Hussein regime, willing to risk everything for the sole purpose of clinging to a mythologized political image of itself as the premier radical Arab power with the capacity and the guile to successfully defy the authority both of the American superpower and the United Nations.

If the facts as we currently know them hold up, the Iraq war will undoubtedly take its place as a classic case of a symbiotically intertwined danse macabre between two nation-states whose addiction to the trappings of political power and jingoistically driven self-importance outweighed all considerations of measured reflection on the costs and consequences of impulsive political behavior. Thousands of dead and wounded innocents and billions of dollars worth of ruined infrastructure are the price that has been paid for the free play of this dueling exercise in over-inflated national egos...>>

GST,re:"Why is it... God... legitmacy". Because it's not
just ANY GOD. I heard the argument that, when asked why
Bush is so fond of this WAR, the answer was: 'Bush is
a good man, he is a Christian'. The logic is, just as I
heard and learned that, as long as you are a Christian,
you're OK regardless of what you do.
'Fanatic' seems to be the impression I got from this kind
of response.
But that's good for religion, you have to be 'fanatic'
in some way to be a good follower.
Everything has 'life-cycle', USA's founding fathers were
at one end of a cycle and Bush and his conspirators are
at the opposite end of the cycle.
If luck has it on our side, the damage/consequence is
minimized. At this juncture, we're seeing a continuous
deteriotion of:
1. gaps between 'have and have not', AG and the conspirators
are making sure that will continue, as MONEY is the way
to control the citizens.
2. war/patriotism will be used as a shield for any ACT.

Hope I'm wrong. But 'religious conflicts' had never ended
peacefully.
As they said in the 'dot-con-era', this time is different.
Let's wait and see.

Why is it that every time somebody invokes "God" as a source of political legitimacy that the next thing that happens is repression, violence and death?

that is what many naive men would have you believe. but as with most of the secular-humanist drivel posted on these boards, the point is easy to refute. the most violent reign of terror, repression, and death in recorded history--one hundred million lives lost--came at the hands of the communists, who rather than invoking God, sought to completely banish God from society.
