Hi NightOwl -

If you had Second Sight you'd see that I have real tears in my eyes at the thought of Jews being the new Gestapo.

On the other hand, my husband just warned me that I've drunk a lot of martinis, so maybe the tears aren't from compassion.

When we learn history, some stories carry special weight. We feel more horror at the thought of a sentient being suffering extinction than the thought of one that is not sentient, because we are sentient beings ourselves, so we identify.

We feel more compassion for the bonobo (a particularly loveable type of chimpanzee, to whom we are closely related) than for the snail darter (a type of fish). Fairly or unfairly, it's the truth.

When it comes to the Israelis, it seems to me that they want to have it both ways. They want extra compassion because they are especially sentient beings, but at the same time, being held to a higher standard is grounds for allegations of anti-Semitism.
