They want extra compassion because they are especially sentient beings, but at the same time, being held to a higher standard is grounds for allegations of anti-Semitism.

It is not so much that the Israelis are held to a higher standard. They hold themselves to a higher standard too. It is that their opponents are not held to any standards, as if Arabs were incapable of standards.

Hi CB,

When it comes to the Israelis, it seems to me that they want to have it both ways. They want extra compassion because they are especially sentient beings, but at the same time, being held to a higher standard is grounds for allegations of anti-Semitism.

All these human "standards" and "*.isms" are much too flexible for me and my birds of a feather. <Hoo><Hoo>

And I suspect that "compassion" in foreign affairs and its relatives, faith hope and charity get a lot less mind share (and tears) in the Congo, Sudan, Gaza, and Tel Aviv than they do in Washington or Chicago.

I also suspect that as many Naked Apes (not to mention Bonobos) have been killed by such kindnesses as not. Mind you I'm not denying the "reality" of these gentler emotions. I'm just suggesting that, like our other emotions, they serve the same master of self-interest.
