As soon as WHO release the number of patients discharged (April 10) it was possible to calculate the death rate. It was around 15% back then and still is (excluding mainland China data which varies based on the latest directive from officials). Younger patients get well quickly or die slowly. Older die quickly or get well slowly. It all averages out, so just about any time you calculate deaths/deaths+discharges you get the true mortality rate.
