The "over the horizon" option is the best one, imo, since it is cheaper, less intrusive, probably effective thanks to our tech edge, and politically palatable.

Plus, after Saddam, no one wants to see the 101st or the 3d Marine Expeditionary Force setting up shop in their backyard.

Yeah, it must depress you, knowing that when Ladeen and Hanson speak, Bush and Cheney listen.

Thanks tekboy....Yes, that's why I asked you...it is a very complex group of situations, any one of which is a long term problem, and probably long term answer.... Glad to see you agree. Thanks as well for that link as well...will bookmark it for tomorrow..

Given he's a hot head, I was surprised at how modest Ledeen's suggestions were in that last column posted here.

It basically boiled down to telling the Iranian young folk (which is mostly everybody there) "our hearts are with you." The "modest material support" could be as simple as disarming that Mom and Pop Iranian resistance outfit Hussein bankrolled - it's weirder than a left handed snake - or making sure the ex pat broadcasters stay in operation.

Apart from offending the mullahs suffering from senility and greed, who the hell is this going to affect in a way which is going to damage US's or Iranian dissidents' interests?

The US is taking necessarily timorous steps in the direction of disassociating itself from the dictators and standing for democracy. Even if the steps are small, it has to talk the talk.

. . . I'd suggest taking a look at Ken Pollack's piece in the new FA on post-Saddam Persian Gulf security.

Looks interesting. My copy arrived last week. I find I'm always more interested in the book reviews than the articles. So I've read them first. Now to Pollack's article.
