That was more or less how it was characterized in the news source (US News and World Report). But the main question is not what happened back then, but why bring up the dead horse in a totally irrelevant context? Because it would be embarrassing to me to reveal that I accepted sociological research that affirmed that moderate, age appropriate spanking, in a context of a loving relationship, was not only harmless, but could be a positive disciplinary technique? (Of course, in your twisted universe it became "permission to beat your son"). Sorry, I am not embarrassed in the least. The studies you and some others quoted were embarrassingly shoddy, not at all tanking into account factors like frequency or severity, much less other relevant factors, like overall affection in the relationship. Anyway, that, for the innocent bystander, should indicate what he is referring to, and sate curiosity.
