Man, that's a tough one. These guys were military police (156 Provost Company) just doing their job for uniforms and civilians alike.

A Kalashnikov to a young man in these parts is like a knife to a Sikh or a Ghurka -- a symbol of coming of age. Taking it away is like having your body parts pulled out in public to be measured and photographed. It really wouldn't hurt anyone under the circumstances but it is humiliating and enrages people.

Get a lot of young hotheads together (with some bitter elders egging them on) and somebody gets lynched. It never makes sense.

However, if someone with a political agenda wanted to make everyone else hate the presence of British grunts they would walk into a police station and slaughter some of the good guys who were trying to make concessions in order to preserve the peace. This would be done in order to provoke a backlash on the part of the British that would enlarge and spread the hatred. War and terror serve best the worst among us.
