I played the piano, flute, and the guitar. I can read notes, but rely heavily on my ear. I only looked at the notes once and then would play the piano by ear (which drove my instructor nuts, the vicious old witch :-) I taught myself the guitar.

I don't think it influences my taste in music. I didn't like classical music at all when I was learning the piano in my pre-teens, and I only developed a taste for it in my twenties. I think it is a bit like cheese - children just don't have the taste buds for it and have to develop them along with their personality, live a few heartaches and stuff and then appreciate the finer lines in music.
