Writing forebodingly about the end of empires is, I believe, a common form of discourse at the beginning of empires, q.v. The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, circa 1776....Adam Smith's An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations was first published in 1776....In 1776 1776 was an interesting year. It gave us "Common Sense" and "The Declaration of Independence," which culminated the Enlightenment, and also Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason," which ended it.
