Because although reserves are limited, supply has been elastic enough to meet or exceed demand. It doesn't mean that it's a wise way to marshall resources (in attempting to leave demand unchecked using any and all means possible to do so, even war). And when when supply is no longer elastic enough (either due to reserve depletion or political factors), prices will skyrocket. You think that day will never come, I think it will come soon (perhaps within the next 5 years give or take 3 years depending on the rate of acceleration of demand from China.
