Mankind specializes in needless suffering, one of the dubious byproducts of our capability to generate abstract thought. Or incoherent thought, depending on how you look at it. But my expectations of my fellow man are lower than yours. NATO now exists only to keep war from breaking out ever again in Europe. But for the rest of the world, the ad hoc "coalitons of the willing" that you can't count on to last beyond lunchtime won't be pretty. The zero-sum us-and-them games will multiply like a virus and infect several regions before it's done. A sad chapter in international relations, indeed.
