You sort of appear to be thinking 'inside the box' with your reply. Technology improvements need not be restricted to resource extraction. They may be the adoption of high strength composites (carbon nanotubes?) in place of steel, resulting lower cost transport mechanisms. Or, as Kalifornia found, painting roofs white thus reducing air condition peak demand.

Like yourself, I'm concerned about the potential for a disruptive transition to a future which relies less on fossil fuels. Listening in briefly on the debate re aspects of the proposed US Energy Bill, I suspect I'm not alone. Hopefully, the combination of wisdom/foresight along with the 'desire for profit' will allow the developed/developing world to avoid the darker outcomes suggested by works like 'The Party's Over'.

I tend to agree with trying to structure our lives and communities with a greater awareness of the fuel intensity and associated costs (sustainability). I also wonder about some of our choices as a larger social structure; specifically things like expending fuel oil/energy in the pursuit of things like Gold and Diamonds, which serve a limited functional purpose in my own life. BWDIK? I'm certainly not qualified nor do I advocate a central planning approach.
