By that time, most Jews had been driven out. They had nothing much to return to, either, given the devastation wrought by Hadrian. And the ban from living in Jerusalem, which was the major population center, remained in effect for centuries. As for pissing off the Romans, it was unduly provocative to propose to build a pagan temple on the sight of the Second Temple, especially after raising Jewish hopes by promising a rebuilding of the Temple. Suppose that we ticked off the Puerto Ricans by despoiling churches, and they rebelled. Would we be in the right to wage a ruthless war, rather than backing down and seeking reconciliation? Would we be in the right if, at the end of the war, we had so far destroyed the countryside and persecuted Catholics that most left as refugees? Would you blame Puerto Ricans for having risen up, or claim that they abandoned their island voluntarily?
