Yes, maybe he changed after, for decades, opposing civil liberties and the Voting Rights acts. Or, maybe he realized that blacks were voting in larger and larger numbers, and he wanted to stay elected.

However, his reputation will forever be linked with segregation, racism, and bigotry. As will McCarthy's be linked with fear and loathing. For the right to associate themselves with either is foolish, or telling, depending on how you look at it.

Btw: liberals had a lot more to do with civil rights gains in the past 50 years than conservatives, who have consisted fought against equal rights. That's why blacks voted for Gore over Bush 90% to 8% in 2000.
