Less than 900K signatues needed, actually. And coming from all over the state. You are aware, aren't you, that no guv in the history of the state gas polled as low as Davis? Suppose Schwarzenegger jumps in. Do you think people will care that Issa spearheaded the petition effort?

The California right is a long-long way from a recall. The word is out now amongst mainstream Republicans that this isn't such a good idea after all, and could mightily backfire in their faces. It could guarantee Bush loses California in 2004 for one thing, as most Californians will feel robbed and cheated. Also, Davis will probably beat whomever the GOP puts up against him, unless it's Riordan maybe. He's the only one they'd trust enough with this mess besides Davis.

The general consensus is 900,000 signatures have been collected. The Sec of State's office is interpreting the election law to Davis's favor and slowing down the count from County registrars. He will be in court next week where they will decide if this is legal. I've read it and there's no wording that would seem to give him any ability to slow things down. The counties are verifying the signatures as they come in and he is advising them to merely collect them for a month and then verify at the end. edit here's a claim of 600K acssonline.org
