rrufff, A cable connection should never shut down - as you know. However, I've infrequently had a message that my pc is offline when opening the first browser window after the computer was doing nothing. Clicking 'try again' usually corrected that problem. [I have Comcast cable].

I'd call my ISP before reinstalling WinXP.

Is there any message when it shuts down?

PS: Comcast recently sent a new power supply for their RCA modem saying a 'very few' of the old ones experienced 'weakened performance'. I had not noticed, but installed the new power supply anyway.
