Hi Nadine, From their joint statements below, selected words from abbas and sharon--words of hope imo. At least Abbas sounds like the real deal and he seems to have sharon convinced which is no easy task. So does Bush get the Nobel Peace Price? What would Noel/Leon, Jacob, Win, Bilow, Rascal, Scott and Marcos say if Peace does in fact breakout? Or will they give full credit to the Quartet for their great efforts? Lets call it for what it is--The US plus the invisible Troika. Mike Abbas said: "Every day that passes without agreement is a lost opportunity. Every person killed is a human tragedy. "So enough killing, enough death, enough pain, and let's go together courageously without hesitation to the future that we all deserve." Sharon said, "Even if painful compromises have to be made here for a genuine peace, a peace for over the generations ... I will be prepared to make it.

<Nothing would be better for Israel than an Arab world that started pursuing prosperity, open societies, and technological advancement.> Israel only exists, could only seize and hold land in the heart of the Arab world, because of the backwardness of Arab societies. What makes you think that pursuing prosperity, or "openness", is incompatible with continuing the war against Israel? Will democratic, technologically advanced Arabs be any more willing to see their land colonized by Jews? Has the collapse of the Soviet Union made Israel safer? Has it made Palestinians more willing to accept being subjects and second-class citizens of a Jewish State? The Soviet Union was no more responsible for Arab resistance to Israel, than Iran is responsible for the daily attacks on U.S. soldiers in Iraq. One day, simply given a continuation of current trends, every front-line Arab State, and every Arab guerrilla group fighting the colonization of their lands by Jews, is going to have WMD. Whether you or I want that to happen, doesn't matter; it's inevitable. Israel needs to make a compromise peace, before that happens. And that means stopping the colonization, stopping the mixing of populations, and making the military boundary correspond to the demographic boundary.
